As the founder of Weems Design Studio, I’ve always believed in the power of innovation and collaboration to solve real-world challenges. I’m thrilled to share the story of how Archymedes.com came to life—a journey that began with a spark of inspiration and grew into a platform designed to empower minority business owners across the nation.
A Challenge Worth Solving
The journey began in 2021, when Weems Design Studio had the privilege of participating in The Opportunity Project (TOP), an initiative by the U.S. Census Bureau. TOP brings together technologists, community leaders, and federal agencies to leverage open data in addressing pressing societal issues. Representing the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), we embarked on a mission to tackle one of the most significant challenges facing minority business enterprises (MBEs): access to capital.

Building Bridges with Open Data
Through TOP, we collaborated with an incredible network of stakeholders, including the FDIC, the city of Coral Gables, Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), and other key partners. These collaborations opened doors to valuable insights and resources, enabling us to design a solution that would simplify the complexities of securing funding for MBEs. Leveraging federal open data and the expertise of our partners, we began laying the foundation for what would become Archymedes.
The Evolution of Archymedes
Archymedes was built to streamline the funding process for business owners by providing step-by-step assistance, application assessments, and connections to vetted lenders. Our goal was simple yet ambitious: to create a platform that demystifies the loan application process and empowers business owners to focus on what they do best—growing their businesses.
The development process was a collaborative journey. Working with CDFIs and leveraging the support of the MBDA, we ensured that the platform addressed the unique challenges faced by minority entrepreneurs. Our participation in TOP’s innovation sprint provided the structure and momentum we needed to refine our vision and bring it to life.

The Role of Community and Collaboration
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been the incredible partnerships we’ve formed along the way. From the FDIC’s insights into financial systems to the city of Coral Gables’ emphasis on community-driven solutions, every collaboration added a layer of depth and purpose to Archymedes. The guidance and feedback we received from these stakeholders were instrumental in shaping a platform that truly serves its users.
Today, our active partnerships include ongoing collaboration with the MBDA and The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. These organizations continue to provide invaluable support and insights as we strive to expand our impact. Additionally, our financial partners—SouthState Bank and Now Account—play a critical role in ensuring that we can connect users with trusted lenders and innovative funding solutions.

Today, Archymedes.com stands as a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. The platform is not just a tool; it’s a bridge to opportunity for business owners who have long been underserved by traditional financial systems. By simplifying the process of accessing funding, we aim to unlock the potential of MBEs and contribute to the broader goal of economic equity.
